In the November of 2020, when things were just settling after the pandemic in my country - I decided to continue the core development of our new app. To give you a general idea about us, we are a boutique pharma consulting company that operates in the midwest. We are proud of the fact that we are small and despite that, have managed to last all these years.Now we wanted to go digital. It is not like we don’t have a web presence, but we wanted something better like the McKinsey Insights application (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mckinsey-insights/id674902075) to reach out to more people with our ideas. It was supposed to be a blog-like application for both Android and Apple operating systems that would help the users read the latest insights from our team. We did not want anything fancy, but something solid, and with a nice experience for the users.Initially, we talked to some of our clients who had experienced in the past with app development. Some of them asked us to look into outsourcing. They told us that all we had to do was to hand over requirements to a company in maybe Europe or India, and they can deliver an application like this in 3-4 months with half the cost of hiring developers, and there’s no hassle of employee management. Keep in mind that apart from my son, who has an IT background, we do not have anyone technical in the company. So, we thought that this would be a great option.We started the process of procurement via various channels. We sought a project management middleman as well since we are not very technical. We received bids from some companies and were contemplating on them. This is where I was contacted by a company in India. They called themselves ‘Systango’, and claimed to have experience of several years. They had a nice website (https://www.systango.com) and claimed to work with companies like Target and Ferrari. Everything was looking fine.I replied and we got on a call with their CEO. In that call, the CEO was warm, seemed knowledgeable, and seemed to understand our needs very well. She asked to give her some sort of documentation so that they could ‘send an estimate’. We complied and sent over a few lines of how we would want the application, how it should look, and other relevant details. We also sent them the hand-drawn concept of the app and two reference mobile applications.Systango team got back to us in four days with a decent proposal. They described the features in the application, how it would look - and the best part, it was dirt cheap. This is where I will admit that I personally committed a mistake. I saw that the cost was half our budget, and considerably lower than other offers, which I found to be very lucrative. Not only that, the proposal said that the application would be built in just two months. They said that they would ‘help’ us put this on both Android and Apple stores as well. I talked to other stakeholders in the company and we were on the same page about this. We decided to go ahead with them.They sent over a contract and NDA to sign. We executed it and they sent us an advance invoice (50% of the money). It was a large sum, but since we had already picked them, we decided to pay. Once they acknowledged the receipt of the advance, the work started. This was around early-to-mid December. My point of contact was a manager who was supposed to:Give us daily updates via email.Have a call with us on Monday, Wednesday, and FridayHonestly, most of these ‘daily updates’ went above my head. My son took an interest in the development of the application and explained to me that to save costs, they were using a ‘hybrid’ programming language that creates both Android and Apple applications called Flutter.I was fine with anything as long as the application worked. In the first few calls, the manager walked me through the screens of the mobile applications that their designers prepared. They looked good, and it seemed like everything was on track. As their deadline of two months (25 February) kept approaching, the calls became fewer and fewer. The manager kept canceling on us by citing several reasons. In fact, around late-January, he apparently took a 15-day long leave because he ‘caught COVID’. If I’m being absolutely honest, I didn’t think much about it.On 20th February, just a few days back, I received an email from the Systango team. The subject line was ‘Test APK delivery’. I was sent a file that my colleague helped me run on his phone since that was an Android file and I use Apple.The app started and I found a horrible opening screen. The image looked elongated and had misspelled words on it. I waited for a while for it to load, and once it did, I was shocked. This application barely looked anything like I was shown. I had to wait for a whole minute to open a single article. When anything on the app loaded, the loading image didn’t vanish, like how it usually happens with other applications. They added all the features, but barely. It looked like a skeleton of what was promised, and it was nothing like what we were shown in their proposal.I attached the proposal and replied to them on the email thread, keeping their CEO in the same. I did not get any response from them till 22nd February, when the manager we were assigned to responded that this was a ‘test’ app, and they would be delivering the final application soon.We received another email on 25th February. This email had the subject line ‘Final APK delivery’. Another Android application. We opened it on my colleague’s phone, and it seemed like NOTHING was changed. It had the exact same issues, still looked horrible. I dropped a complaint again saying that the app was unfinished, and it is nothing like what was promised. Didn’t get a response for the next two days again. I followed up with them, this time talking about legal ramifications, since they promised a lot of features in the contract that the app did not have, and it looked nowhere close to the screen.Following was the verbatim response from their CEO:we delivered what you asked us to make… what more are we supposed to send? Only thing remaining from our side is to host the app which we will do. Send us the remaining amount and we will do that.My response was drafted by my son, and was pretty detailed. He wrote at lengths, attaching pictures about how every screen in the application was wildly different than what was promised.The CEO responded with:consider this our final delivery from this side... now it is on you if you wish to host or notI was taken aback by the sheer unprofessionalism of their email. I immediately called my lawyer and we discussed this. Apparently, suing a company in India takes up a lot of time and capital. They have a system in place that ‘shields’ them from getting sued by companies outside the country, and usually cases like this don’t hold up there.I responded to them that we will not be hosting this app, but we want a refund. The CEO outright REFUSED, saying that we were in the wrong because we did not pay them the remaining amount.At this point, I didn’t want to deal with this and just wanted to focus on my business. My son asked to explore more legal options, but honestly, I was too tired.We lost the money, had no application, and moreover, we lost a lot of energy talking to them. My son found similar cases on the internet. He even found one with the same company, Systango. I know that we should have done our due diligence. I understand that development is a process that takes time and care. But I never expected to get scammed like this. Companies like Systango are made up of scam artists who feel like they can exploit people by building an internet ‘wall’ where they can hide behind good-looking websites and fake reviews. I was conned, and I felt like I should share this with the world. Please do your due diligence before giving money to any company.Someday, I feel like they will face retribution.

Just over 6 months ago, we had an idea for our product and began our search for our first developer. While interviewing applicants for our product and its development, it became clear that Systango was best among the other companies. 2 months later, we had 3 developers producing excellent work of chain of command and we were in discussion about future development efforts and optimization. One month after that we had produced version 1 of our product, ready to release, just in time for our test date. We could manage to do all of the above mentioned just because of Systango. They are really good partners and have a nice developer team.

I am a web-based developer in Australia. For last few years, I have been hiring people on oDesk. I have made about 200 players far spent about $95,000 of oDesk and most of the hires have not been that great. The experience has been subpar a lot of the time. But in the last few months, I started working with an agency named Systango. The overall experience has really been great compared to previous agencies that I found. The communication with the developments has been much better. The COI quality has been best and deadlines are met.
