Project In WordPress Gallery Plugin – NextGEN Gallery
WordPress Gallery Plugin
NextGEN Gallery has been the industry’s standard WordPress gallery plugin since 2007 and continues to receive over 1.5 million new downloads per year. It’s easy for simple photo galleries, but powerful enough for the most demanding photographers, visual artists, and imaging professionals.
On the back end, NextGEN offers a complete WordPress gallery management system with the ability to batch upload photos, import meta data, add/delete/rearrange/sort photos, edit thumbnails, group galleries into albums, and more.
On the front end, the free version of NextGEN provides three main gallery styles (slideshow, thumbnail, and imagebrowser galleries) and two album styles (compact and extended), all of which come with a wide array of options for controlling size, style, timing, transitions, controls, lightbox effects, and more. The best gets better with full support for the Gutenberg block editor. Now you can add a gallery or album anywhere on your site, with a page builder type feel directly in the WordPress editor.

NextGEN Gallery offers an easy-to-use Insert Gallery Window, which means you never need to work with shortcodes again when inserting and manageing galleries – if you would prefer not too.
If you do want to work with shortcodes, there is a powerful shortcode system as you’d expect of a popular WordPress gallery plugin. Learn About NextGEN Gallery Shortcodes.

The function that creates a new gallery by importing images from an existing folder is broken and simply hangs on my system after importing only a handful of images. Support wants me to disable every OTHER plugin, upgrade to a beta/unsupported version of php, and (this one takes the cake) grant them administrative access to my site so that they can log in and tromp around, doing who knows what.
They refuse to accept the possibility that this could be a defect in their code, or to provide any meaningful assistance in actually diagnosing the problem. Apparently their code has no built-in troubleshooting or logging capabilities to assist in shooting problems. No thanks! Instead, I’ll dump this plug-in and search for one that actually works.
It’s been many years since I last worked on a website that had the NextGen gallery. Back then it was the ONLY way to add photo galleries to WordPress as WP’s tools were pretty basic.
Today, after using NextGen for the first time in many years I am so glad to see how much it’s grown and what it can do.
Able to upload a zip file?
Built-in photo resizing?
An easy-to-use interface?
All “yesses” and all very appreciated.
I use Next ten for providing galleries of model aircraft competition meetings linked to result tables – and also for “how-to” pictures for those wishing to learn something which needs pictures for an explanation. The free version works well for our not-for-profit organisation. Images are easy uploaded, Alt and description texts are easy to insert, and changing the picture order is as easy as wink. Insertion of galleries into a page integrates nicely with the WordPress block system. Really like this plug-in.
I’ve used NextGen Pro basic for a couple years+, and still do. About a year, after quite a bit of “tire kicking” of the various alternatives, started using the Pro version on a new website. Quite recently I started using their new automated print fulfillment, and am working on getting that set up.
I find the NextGen functionality quite good. I like that Imagely continues to make improvements. I’ve had a bunch of questions, so I’ve had a fair amount of interaction with their support team. They. Are. Amazing! I have (and still) support clients myself & have high standards on how they should be treated. Imagely support still amazes me. They not only go out of their way to be helpful, but they actually solve issues, provide helpful responses to my questions, and they always follow up with me before closing tickets.
I am glad I chose to go with Imagely/NextGen, and look forward to seeing how they evolve over time.
