Project In Polylang
Polylang allows you to create a bilingual or multilingual WordPress site. You write posts, pages and create categories and post tags as usual, and then define the language for each of them. The translation of a post, whether it is in the default language or not, is optional.
- You can use as many languages as you want. RTL language scripts are supported. WordPress languages packs are automatically downloaded and updated.
- You can translate posts, pages, media, categories, post tags, menus, widgets…
- Custom post types, custom taxonomies, sticky posts and post formats, RSS feeds and all default WordPress widgets are supported.
- The language is either set by the content or by the language code in url, or you can use one different subdomain or domain per language
- Categories, post tags as well as some other metas are automatically copied when adding a new post or page translation
- A customizable language switcher is provided as a widget or in the nav menu
The author does not provide support on the wordpress.org forum. Support and extra features are available to Polylang Pro users.
If you wish to migrate from WPML, you can use the plugin WPML to Polylang
If you wish to use a professional or automatic translation service, you can install Lingotek Translation, as an addon of Polylang. Lingotek offers a complete translation management system which provides services such as translation memory or semi-automated translation processes (e.g. machine translation > human translation > legal review).
Thanks a lot to all translators who help translating Polylang.
Thanks a lot to Alex Lopez for the design of the logo.
Most of the flags included with Polylang are coming from famfamfam and are public domain.
Wherever third party code has been used, credit has been given in the code’s comments.

Polylang works very well in many cases, but. Many incompatibilities with other plugins, especially the builders (for me Elementor, site origin builder), but I encountered problems with other plugins among other dynamic sidebars systems.
The authors of the plugin do not seem to take into account a collaborative work with the authors of the other plugins.
In my experience (still weak) a multilingual system, yes, but on sites that use few third parties.
The problem of builders is still annoying.
Polylang duplicated all my image files. So, I had 4 languages available on my website. Polylang duplicated 3 times every media file.
This is the worst plugin for translation. At core, it just helps you duplicate every aspect of your site, including categories.
So translated categories just becomes seperate categories with there own slug and association with posts. Each page and post needs to be duplicated too.
There is no option for “All Languages” option, you must associate an item with one of the languages you select. This creates a management nightmare as you in essense will be managing Translation * Posts/Categories numbers of assets independently. An ideal translation plugin will provide translation of taxonomies and will not force the users to create new menus, categories and widgets just to have the labels translated.
Use WpGlobus or WPML if you can. You will regret midway using this plugin after loosing a great deal of time on configuring it.
I read everything, followed the tutorials and tried to use professional translators with this through Lingotek.
It COMPLETELY ruined my website! As in ENTIRELY COMPLETELY! The front page was redirected to a french version of the page that didn’t exist. The original front page in English was completely deleted. Not even traceable in the database. Completely GONE!
I was extremely lucky that I did a backup of the site before trying my luck with this. Otherwise, my business would have been RUINED!
I strongly advise making as if this plugin never existed. Just forget you ever saw it!
- Where to find help ?
- Is Polylang compatible with WooCommerce?
- Do you need translation services?
